How to become a Key Person of Influence

Words don’t do this mobile technology justice. Just watch.

September 30, 2009 | By James Tuckerman

Aussie innovators Insqribe on Saturday launched what they are calling “Augmented Reality to the Insqribe real-time proximity marketing platform.”

Normally I’d crucify any technology developer for using such unbelievably meaningless jargon (seriously guys, you need to hire someone because that sort of language is only going to ‘augment’ the ire of potential customers).

However, after watching the video, I couldn’t help but be impressed.

Here’s my take…

Consumers: Imagine that you are walking down the street with your mobile phone in hand and you’d like to know what is going on in your neck of the woods. You can now hold up your phone and, using your mobile phone’s camera, see “tags” overlaid onto whatever you’re looking at. For example, you might observe a “Two-for-one” coffee offer at Joe’s Coffee. Or an “Art Gallery Opening Today.”

Businesses: Imagine being able to alert passersby about upcoming offers, news and specials when these prospective customers are in the proximinity of your business. For example, you might want to promote a “Two-for-one” coffee offer at Joe’s Coffee. Or an “Art Gallery Opening Today.”

Did I mention that repetition is also an effective way to communicate a message?

Now watch the video.

This sounds really cool. This would be even better if it was connected to and SMS ordering and payment system like mHITs so you could send through your payment by SMS ahead of time and then just turn up and pick up your “two-for-one” offer at Joe’s Coffee – now that would be really cool! Check out mhits at http://www.mhits.com.au. I wonder if they know about this? Roy

Oh-humm, I suppose someone may actually use it, after all you really need a mobile network to start with don’t you?
A lot of places in Australia don’t have one yet, well, maybe, one network and one tower to cover a few hundred square miles and crappy internet access.
Need I go on? (I do think you need more than one tower for the mobile to work out your position, something to do with cross referencing)
I just counted 15 people in the main street, while I had my coffee.
I don’t think I will get excited over such things just yet.
Footpath signage will rein supreme for some time to come.
