Why we’re embarrassed about our new website (and proud of it!)

February 9, 2009 | By James Tuckerman

In mid-2008, we wrote about a clever Australian company called TrickyTix on the topic of Product Development.

TrickyTix CEO Scott Handsaker provided us with the following prescient quote, which I’ve paraphrased:

“If you’re not slightly embarrassed about your new web product when you launch, you’re too late.”

This week, we launched a new website. You’re seeing it now.

So, ok, it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles quite yet but we promise that you, dear Anthillians, will be the first to notice its evolution over coming weeks and months.

For now, I’d like to point out the new links on our three-tiered navigation bar, which are generally geared toward web readers with a passion for business. Before now, we offered links that merely reflected the content of the print magazine. This will obviously help if you have a need for specific information.

We’ve also made it far easier to meander through the site and stumble across hidden treasures from the archive, entertaining and thought provoking videos and, of course, leave your views and converse with other readers.

We’ve added a number of social networking tools (and still have a few more up our sleeve). If you want to ‘Share’ Anthill or ‘Digg’ Anthill or add us to your Facebook page, you now can. In fact, please do spread the word!

In coming weeks you can expect to see Movie and Book Clubs. (Won’t it be great when you can have the latest business documentaries and bestsellers sent to your door and the platform to share your thoughts with other Anthillians!)

We’ll soon be hosting Webinars and other live events online (with some help from our sponsors). Plus, we’ll be launching a range of new email-driven education series. (‘Learn how to raise VC’ or ‘Get your cashflow in check’ over 10 easy emails.)

If you have any further ideas, leave your thoughts below.

The site might not be the polished pearl just yet and some of the links might initially seem underpopulated. But don’t bother asking, “When will the site be finished?”

Because the simple answer is, “Never!” icon wink Why were embarrassed about our new website (and proud of it!)

Nice work guys – and you’ve chosen the right platform for this (WordPress).

Two minor things: 1. you should have Kwoff not Digg links for social bookmarks, and 2. this post should be categorised under Announcements or something similar; not simply ‘uncategorised’.

    Nice work.

Congrats on the new site James….nice work!

We took our own advice and launched our closed-beta testing trial, despite not really being happy with almost anything about the product. The web is however the perfect place to launch a “good enough” version of pretty much anything, and then extend from there.

We know where you’re coming from with the “When will the site be finished?” comment! Love your work James (and crew), from the Flying Solo gang. :)

    Congratulations
Like the use of wordpress and they way you guys optimised the website.
just mind your tags as Zac said (BTW Zac, I see Digg as social news rather than bookmarking service)and consider a “Twitter this” link along with share this, diggs, etc
The website is clean, functional and easy to navigate.
Please just fix the “contact us” on the footer
    Congrats for Anthill and staff.

Well done on getting the revamp up and live. WordPress certainly has matured over the years, hasn’t it? More than just a blogging tool these days.

I’d be interested in a feature story on the experience of moving the magazine to WordPress – what you discovered that worked/didn’t work, how long it took, who did what, what plug-ins were employed, and what other tools the site integrates with, such as ad networks, email delivery platforms, etc.

Perhaps it would be best to outsource that to a freelance writer and get them to interview you?

    Hi James,
Nice migration. And yes, as Alan Jones has mused -”I’d be interested in a feature story on the experience of moving the magazine to WordPress”
I too have enlisted the power of WordPress and am amazed at the simplistic and ordered approach of the software.

Your advertising ‘blows’. I would not be offended by placement of your revenue generating ads in more strategic places. As for the Header Ad. I had to look for it after scrolling past the masthead to get to the meat of the page.
I also look at Google Adsense Ads as giving myself and others an alternative viewpoint or option. I know Google can be slightly crass, but hey, it pays the bills. I find Flash Ads more offensive and distracting

Keep up the momentum and I hope your reap the benefits.

    Cheers
    Mick

Absolutely correct “Ant”itude… evolving websites are one part of the equation, but also growing other areas of your activities is important.

I an not sure any more if one’s own website, except as an online brochure, is as important as what else one is linked into – e.g. right SN’s, right contacts and informational places (e.g. Anthill, Flying Solo – Hi Robert) etc., as it is not so important to hold the “answers” on onsite, as to hold the right links and feeds to other’s who are specialists…i.e. the value add for the user. Hmmm. Something to ponder when designing it. Not replicating, not wishing to create a mere stickiness… but leveraging the generousity of IP … Comments on this? Agghhh. So many things to do, so little time to learn all about the options! :-)
