Verizon attempts to dowse iPhone sizzle with iDon’t ad

October 20, 2009 | By Paul Ryan

Serious players in the lucrative mobile phone space have been thinking long and hard about how to compete with the sizzle that Apple’s iPhone has with consumers. Motorola, Nokia and even Research in Motion (BlackBerry) have been scrambling to reduce their slide in market share since the iPhone was launched two years ago.

US telco Verizon seems to have settled on an open warfare tactic on behalf of Motorola’s yet-to-be-released Droid handset. This ad, dubbed “iDon’t”, runs through all the things the iPhone doesn’t do (that Droid does… or will).

It will be interesting to see whether this kind of approach has any impact on consumers attitudes to Apple’s un-droid-like iPhone.

UPDATE: Mike Arrington over on TechCrunch seems to think Droid is the real deal.

interesting, iDon’t know if open software platform realy matters to me, iDon’t know if a full keyboard is why i would buy a mobile phone?, iDon’t know if I would prefer to use my camera for photos or my phone, or run widgets or run simultaneous apps… or open development….

can I still make a call with all these new phones these days?

    * What is a widget and why would I want one running on my phone? Who on earth is their target market? The only possible answer is software developers.

    * I can’t see this advert converting anyone that has an iPhone or wants an iPhone. While all their claims may be correct, the audience clamoring for those things may well be the same audience that will still buy an iPhone for the street cred.

    * Droid? Are you kidding me? I can say “iPhone” in the boardroom. I can’t say “Droid”.

I can’t see this advert having any effect on iPhone sales at all, though it may well sell a lot of Droids to people that enjoy hating the iPhone.

Sweet! I had an iPhone once. I didn’t like it EXACTLY for the reasons in the video. I renamed my phone the iDissapointment.

I quite like this ad, but they forgot a few things: No saving email attachments or web downloads, no sharing files between apps, extremely limited Bluetooth utility, unnececarily difficult to customise, inability to use 3G modem if carrier wants to charge extra, significant API restrictions, applications competing with Apple products are simply rejected, and I could probably go on.

There are plenty of *smart* people who actually use reason to make decisions and informing them of the shortfalls may very well discourage them from buying an iPhoney. To be honest, I often see somebody with an uncustomised iPhoney with 50 pages of mostly useless apps and think ‘noob’.

Guess what, you can’t call me a hater either – I wrote this on my jailbroken iPwn =D

9 things a 9 month-old can teach you about online marketing [VIDEO]

This morning, I sat down with my 9-month old son, Julian, to feed him breakfast. This is one of the jobs allocated to me as a first-time, new father. Remembering the arduous steps required to complete yesterday morning’s meal (and the day before that), and contemplating how bizarre it is that I must work so hard to provide him something that will make him stronger and healthier and happier, I began to think about online marketing. Yes, the brain works in mysterious ways. (And I am kind of sleep deprived.)
