1. THE BEGINNING

This innovation initially came to life when…

This innovation came to life when I was travelling solo and realised there was no easy way to meet other travellers in a new or future destination. Meeting new people in a new destination was hard! In an age when there is a social network for everything’ there was no social network for travellers. We decided to change that and launched Travello (then known as Outbound) in January 2015. Within a week the app was being used in over 40 countries and within a month 120 countries and rest, as they say, is history!

The purpose of this innovation is to…

The purpose of the innovation is to enhance the travel experience by allowing travellers to connect and meet in new or future destinations. The best thing about travelling is meeting other travellers, and we make that easier!

It does this by…

It does this by using your location to find other travellers around you. It also connects you with other travellers you have common interests with. You can also enter in future trips and we can tell you who will be in a future destination at the same time, so you can start connecting with other travellers before you even arrive!

3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

The innovation improves on what came before because the alternative was trying to connect with strangers in the hostel common room or on a day trip! We make meeting likeminded travellers in a new destination easy! For younger generations, meeting people on a digital-platform is a completely natural experience, and it is actually meeting people in person that is difficult!

Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…

The various benefits for the customer include the ability to connect with like-minded travellers, match travel plans, find location based deals/meetups, join travel related group and also utilise the 70,000 free WiFi spots we have in our WiFi Finder!

4. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In the past, this problem was solved by…

Previously, the problem was solved by chance meetings with other travellers in foyers and/or on tours. You never knew if there was a friend for life in the same hostel, because you never crossed paths with that person. We take the chance out of meeting people and allow you to see exactly who’s around – possibly a friend for life!

Its predecessors/competitors include…

It’s predecessors include hostel common rooms or travel forums on Tripadvisor. There were no real digital competitors in this space. Since we launched, there are now a few competitors including Solo-Traveller app and Backpackr.

5. TARGET MARKET

It is made for…

It is made for anyone that travels, however our core market are 18-32yo travellers. The total addressable market is huge with over 19 million inbound/outbound numbers in Australia alone. In the USA that number explodes to 86 million and that is only 2 markets. As we evolve, we will be curating travel activities/experiences for out individual users. the tour and activity market is currently a trillion dollar market. So the opportunity from both a consumer and revenue perspective is huge.

Our marketing strategy is to…

Out current marketing revolves around organic growth and word of mouth – which has seen us expand to over 180 countries. But we are currently entering into strategic partnerships with a number of high profile travel brands that want to utilise our technology for their own customers. This will allow Travello to see exponential growth in the near future.
