TopGeek 2.0 is here, with a TV show hosted by Lawrence Leung to boot.
iiNet, Australia’s second-largest DSL broadband provider, is following up on its successful contest last year, won by comic fan Cassandra James.
Last year, the search to find the country’s most talented geek put over 200 contestants through a series of challenges over nearly four months. The contest tested challengers on gaming, fandom, creativity and Internet skills.
Like in the first edition, this year’s winner will score an all-expenses paid trip to the United States to attend one of four “geek” events — ComicCon, Consumer Electronic Show (CES), South by Southwest (SXSW) or Penny Arcade Expo (PAX).
Celebrating geekdom
“No matter what you’re into, if you’re passionate about something you can be considered a geek, which is why we’ve introduced a variety of entry categories including art, tech, gaming, Internet and fandom,” said iiNet’s Communications Manager Anthony Fisk.
iiNet has upped the ante this year with bigger and better challenges, but none bigger than TopGeek TV – a fortnightly series to be hosted by Leung starting end of March.
“Being a massive geek myself, I was so excited to be asked to host iiNet’s TopGeek TV that I got a nosebleed. I’m intrigued to see whether the chosen geeks can eclipse me in obsession and obscurity. If they try, I will crush them like an AT-AT on the Planet Hoth,” said Leung.
TopGeek TV will air each fortnight from 30 March until the TopGeek 2.0 final on 10 May 2012. The series plans to take a closer look at the nerdy stories behind the competition and the geeky finalists.
To enter the contest, check out the TopGeek site here. A contestant needs to upload his or her photo, pick the geek category and state why he or she deserves to be Australia’s next TopGeek. The five categories are: Art, gaming, tech geek, Internet and fandom.
Surely there’s an Anthillian worthy of the TopGeek mantle?
