Former i.lab CEO joins OneVentures investment team

Long-time Anthill supporter and former CEO of Queensland-based i.lab Incubator Anne-Marie Birkill, has taken up partnership of the new Sydney-based venture capital fund OneVentures, which launched on 22 March. She will manage the Fund alongside fellow entrepreneurs Dr Michell Deaker and Dr Paul Kelly.

The fields of science and technology are undeniably dominated by men. However, the contributions of women in these areas has been overlooked and underestimated throughout history. At the recent 2009 Women in Technology (WiT) Awards presentation, WiT President and i.lab CEO Anne-Marie Birkill delivered a keynote address in which she lauded the little-known achievements of female scientists and technologists, and called for greater acknowledgement and support for women today. Here is an edited extract from Birkill’s speech.

For Anne-Marie Birkill, CEO of i.lab technology incubator, life has been rather serendipitous. Graduating with a science degree, she fell into plant biotechnology, where a short-term secondment to Brisbane transformed her into General Manager and 25 percent shareholder within two years. So began a twenty year career spanning management, consulting, lecturing and new technology incubation.
