1. THE BEGINNING

This innovation initially came to life when…

Co-founder Ed was at the beach and watched a mother search through her bag to find sunscreen to apply to her two children. After failing to find any sunscreen, the mother awkwardly asked another family for sunscreen and then struggled to apply the sunscreen to her children. Ed reflected on this and thought surely there must be a way to provide people with easy access to affordable sunscreen. Ed shared this experience with three mates and immediately they shared Ed’s vision and passion for creating a solution. With co-founders Anton, James and Thomas, Ed created Sunscreen Stations Australia in 2013.

2. WHAT & HOW

The purpose of this innovation is to…

“Slip, Slop, Slap” launched in 1981 is accredited with causing a shift in attitudes and behaviours. Fast forward to 2015 and we’ve created a pioneering idea that could potentially replicate the success and educate children about the importance of sunscreen.

It does this by…

We’ve developed a range (large, medium and small) of innovative spray stations that dispenses four-hour water-resistant SPF 50+ sunscreen via an easy-to-use spray gun — “providing an effective and convenient solution for those who have forgotten sunscreen”. Our spray stations come with a range of features making them suitable for a wide range of public and private uses.

3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

The Australian sunscreen sector is a mature industry with a number of established domestic and international firms selling traditional sunscreen. Sunscreen Stations Australia is the only business in Australia that sells sunscreen spray stations.

Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…

Convenient and affordable sun protection for all. Complements the community focus on living an active outdoors lifestyle. Provides an additional source of income. All stations provide space for corporate branding/advertising, broadening communications channels with customers/clients.

4. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In the past, this problem was solved by…

Traditionally, people have had to bring their own sunscreen and be prepared for all situations, either planned or unintentionally, where they spend a prolonged period of time in the sun. We believe that Sunscreen Stations Australia provides people with a convenient and affordable solution that allows them to enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle without the fear of being burnt.

Its predecessors/competitors include…

There are no sunscreen spray station competitors in the domestic market. There are overseas businesses that provide sunscreen spray stations; however their products are not compatible with the Therapeutic Good Administration (TGA) regulations.

5. TARGET MARKET

It is made for…

Our range of spray stations have been designed for both public and private markets. Some of the potential target markets include: Public swimming pools; Sport clubs (e.g. tennis, golf); Outdoor festivals; Surf Life Saving Clubs; Construction sites; Theme parks; Hotel chains / Caravan parks; Schools  and Universities; and Beach esplanades. The dynamic nature of our product range means that there is an opportunity for our spray stations anywhere that Australians are exposed to the sun.

It is available for sale through…

Sunscreen Stations Australia offers three different options for those that are interested in the spray stations: 1) Short-term leasing; 2) Outright purchase; and 3) Revenue share agreement.

Our marketing strategy is to…

1) Secure funding to build at twenty stations and donate them to public schools in a pilot initiative. We’d measure the usage of the spray stations and use the results to work with the government to implement a rollout.

2) Conduct a campaign with the private sector to arrange for the manufacture/installation of spray stations for the 2015/16 summer.
