Smart Energy: Real-time internet-enabled energy measurement and control

This innovation initially came to life when…

I had the idea that a community-based approach to energy measurement and control could better help people to save energy and money, to share and learn. And so, the Smart Energy Groups project was born.

WHAT & HOW

The purpose of this innovation is to…

Help people save energy and money, by using the Internet technologies to make our invisible energy use visible.

It does this by…

We connect your switchboard to the Internet with SEGmeter. It senses the energy flowing through the circuits which we craft into information, beautiful visualisations and graphics. We then allow people to control their things and share their story.

PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

People receive their energy score card once every 90 days from the utility company. It’s difficult to understand, and impossible to assess impacts of changes as they are being made.

Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…

The product allows people to visualise their energy usage in real time using the internet, to drive behaviour change and selection of the best energy efficiency measures. It helps to give people back control of their energy usage.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In the past, this problem was solved by…

In the past this problem has been solved by single point energy meters and/or expensive home automation system components. We have used the internet and open hardware to revolutionise the experience and lower the cost.

Its predecessors/competitors include…

Some of the competitors are the Wattson, Current Cost, Effergy and other single point energy meters. Our innovation takes the same basic concepts and uses the Internet to transform the data into information.

TARGET MARKET

It is made for…

  1. Eco-conscious homeowners who want to do something proactively to understand their energy usage.
  2. Small-Medium Enterprises who are targeting cost saving/energy efficiency measures.
  3. Commercial and Industrial customers looking to understand building performance and implement demand measures.
  4. Electronics hobbyists who build kit projects.

DISTRIBUTION STRATEGY

It is available for sale through…

It is available from our online store, through partners, social media and word of mouth.

Our marketing strategy is to…

Build awareness of our product and service through the social channels, leverage partners with existing customer bases, and position for the coming time when this kind of technology may go mainstream.
