What is 30under30?

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year saw a surplus of highly qualified entrants, so we thought we would highlight some of the bright and innovative nominees who just missed the Top 30 by a wink. Behold, our 2012 30under30 Honourable Mentions! More.

Skye Blackburn, NSW (b. 1983)

Name: Skye Blackburn
Age: 29 (Born: July 1983)
Gender: Female
State: NSW
Known for: Butterfly Skye’s Bug Shop

Skye Blackburn has always been a regular on the 30under30 list. It’s a testament to her impact as a bug evangelist, and the effectiveness of her one-of-a-kind campaigns to make creepy-crawlies less creepy.

Through her insect shop, Butterfly Skye’s, Blackburn breeds butterfly colonies for weddings and festive events, and sells products like insect life cycle kits for curious toddlers and, more recently, edible bugs encased in lollipops.

That last campaign — to replace ‘creepy’ with ‘crunchy’ — has given Blackburn her biggest PR to date. Rolling onward, Butterfly Skye’s domain now includes The Green Scorpion, a website devoted to the growing market of pet invertebrates.

In her application this year, we were especially fond of Blackburn’s business description: “My business is the nerdy kid that does well in maths and has no friends, then has a supermodel wife at the 10-year reunion!”

You know, Skye, we would have gone with the little caterpillar that turns into…nah, we’ll run with yours.

Anthill asks: Skye Blackburn, what motivates you as an entrepreneur?

Educate people from all walks of life about the amazing world of bugs. I have (what some would call) an obsession for those little things that help our world go round and feel so lucky that everyday I wake up and get to make a living doing what I absolutely love.
