1. THE BEGINNING

This innovation initially came to life when…

My wife, who is a community nurse, was often woken when sleeping after night duty by her office. It was the day staff calling to see if she could fill a shift which had suddenly become available. The day staff couldn’t tell who had just worked and normally if she wanted extra shifts she had to call work beforehand and put her name down on a list. Then if her employer needed to find someone they had to call people one by one. They needed a way to ask people who could work and were available in one step.

2. WHAT & HOW

The purpose of this innovation is to…

…allow businesses to co-plan last minute changes with staff from their phones. Confirming shifts and giving businesses time back for other things.

It does this by…

…letting staff update their availability for shifts whenever they want from their phones via an app or website. Staff are also sent their regular schedules by the app. When illness or other changes make extra shifts available, staff who qualify (using skills, fatigue rules and availability) are notified of the shift. First response claims the shift and updates the schedule.

3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

It removes time wasted on call lists to fill shifts. It removes misunderstandings from noticeboard or spreadsheet shift management processes. It involves staff in having a say in their work life balance. It reduces underemployment by making shift replacement simple for employers.

Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…

Employers have a simple process saving time and confirming shifts.

Employees are more engaged as they have a say in their work life balance generating higher throughput, taking less sick leave and are less likely to switch employers.

4. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In the past, this problem was solved by…

Call lists, SMS or email, either manually or from a software solution. These blast out to everyone and are not integrated to responses. So if multiple people respond, they then all have to be contacted back to confirm if they have the shift or not along with details of where they are working.

Its predecessors/competitors include…

…manual solutions (such as email, noticeboards, spreadsheets) business-driven software solutions (Deputy, WhenIwork) and employee driven solutions (Shyft)

5. TARGET MARKET

It is made for…

businesses with greater than 100 staff or businesses that have a large number of locations they need to send staff to.

It is available for sale through…

…our website with links to the relevant app stores for phones and tablets when available.

Our marketing strategy is to…

…work through our BlueChilli network as alumni of that programme, business forums, co-marketing opportunities with other startups in the B2B space and directly with businesses we have in out beta programme.
