Get over it.
You can take a mortgage out against an already existing property and access the capital (now as cash) that way.

Great article.. Thanks

The Scandinavians are simply in a league of their own.

When a Norwegian child is born, its parents are entitled to 46 glorious weeks of leave at 100% pay. Naturally, this was deemed completely unsatisfactory and this year, paid paternity leave was extended from 6 weeks to 10 weeks. In Finland, the word "corruption" is a mythical creature.

Has no one out there thought to study how the Scandinavians have evolved and left the rest of the world in the dust?

Mr Buxton? My Year 10 history teacher from Prince Alfred? It's been a long time, sir.

Yes, no one takes out a mortgage to buy a pint. How absurd. I'm suitably chastened.

How do you get a mortgage for a pint of beer?
A mortgage is on "real" property - and is supposed to be paid back. Unlikely for any amount of beer that will be drunk - Coopers special brew which is cellared could be the exception.
In any event, the term you seek is Loan not mortgage.
I would have expected better from an Editor of an esteemed publication.
