1. THE BEGINNING

This innovation came to life when…

I worked for a company and managed 60 apprentices who were required to fill in a “DOT SHEET” as their logbook. It didn’t take long to work out that the apprentices didn’t understand the process and the resulting data poorly reflected reality. Acknowledging that tradespeople in general are visual learners I came up with the concept of a product that used pictures to depict day to day workplace activities. Hence my company built My Profiling, a web-based pictorial log book.

2. WHAT & HOW

The purpose of this innovation is to…

The purpose of this innovation is to provide a platform for gathering evidence of work activity and mapping it to units of study. This is particularly relevant to the Vocational Education Sector where evidence is required to show that the theory studied is applied in the workplace.

It does this by…

It does this by providing the user with a suite of pictures that reflect the day to day tasks they engage in. Each of these pictures is mapped back to the relevant performance criteria within a Unit of study. The resulting profile can be viewed by the training organisation and considered in the process of resulting competency achieved.

3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

This innovation improves on what came before because the product uses a patented pictorial database to reflect tasks. A 2013 review of all online log books by the Construction Industry Advisory Board of South Australia nominated My Profiling as the log book of choice. Subsequently it has been selected to be used by all construction apprentices in South Australia.

Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…

Its various benefits to the customer / end-user include ease of use, accuracy and accountability. It is readily available via internet browser or phone app. The system facilitates increased levels of engagement between all parties, the student, workplace supervisor and trainer/teacher. It is transparent and meets compliance requirements.

4. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In the past, this problem was solved by…

In the past, this problem was solved by distribution of paper based log books with issues such as loss and damage, lack of accuracy and integrity. Once submitted to the Training Organisation, they had to be manually checked. Some linear online versions of existing paper based log books have become available but are word based.

Its predecessors/competitors include…

It’s predecessors/competitors include online log books using a text based method to explain what is required and record the apprentices comments. We patented the concept of a pictorial data based mapped to units of study, an approach that hasn’t been used before.

5. TARGET MARKET

It is made for…

It is made for the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector specifically targeting apprentices and trainees in Australia. It is marketed to Training Organisations who are required to collect evidence of workplace activity in issuing qualifications. The product not only collects this evidence but maps the activity to units of study with no effort on the part of the Training Organisation. It provides realtime data, allows informed decisions to be made and assists in governmental compliance. Employers also benefit from these features. The concept can be expanded to wherever there is a need to map day to day tasks to some form of measurement.

It is available for sale through…

It is available for sale through an annual subscription model. Larger training organisations have an option to sign a license agreement.
The mobile app is available to download from app stores.

Our marketing strategy is to…

Our marketing strategy is to based on the referral system at the moment. In the future we envisage setting up a sales team in each state. Within the Training Sector there is opportunity to market through conferences & events, publications and social media.
