What is 5over50?

5over50 is an Anthill initiative launched in mid-2010 as an offshoot of its popular 30under30 awards. It recognises Australian entrepreneurs over age 50 who have started a new business in the past five years. More.

Peter Murphy, NSW (b. 1948)

Name: Peter Murphy
Age: 61 (Born: December 1948)
Gender: Male
State: NSW

Starting any company in deep in the midst of the global financial nosedive is no mean feat. Spawning a business that employs 18 people and pulls in $200,000 in monthly revenue after only 17 months of existence is a jaw-dropper.

Fellow Anthillians, meet Peter Murphy.

He owns Stonebridge Systems, a enterprise content management and consulting services company. Stonebridge helps medium-size and large businesses capture, manage, store and deliver paper or electronic documents. It’s the first business the 61-year-old has ever owned.

Murphy said he and his staff recruited specialists in enterprise content and web content to consult with clients, supply management tools, and implement and support the solutions.

“We convinced tier-one customers that we could deliver and be relied upon,” said Murphy, who expects Stonebridge will be a $4 million company by its second year.

He got the word out about Stonebridge with lead-generation services and by taking a personal approach with senior management in large corporations. Murphy says his two top sales feats are convincing professional staff to come aboard, and convincing two main suppliers that Stonebridge could deliver on Murphy’s vision so the suppliers would appoint Stonebridge as reseller partners.

“I have a need to prove I can build a successful organisation for myself without corporate funding and support,” Murphy says. “I want to build an ethical, moral, sustainable company in today’s business climate.”
