Hi Adrian - Yes, there seems to be movement, but so far no apps brought to the public, unlike in the US. I guess the negative views in the story are due, in some degree, to the track record of government. So far, only RailCorp has come out. I await developments eagerly. Generally, the open gov project seems to be far more advanced in the US; they even have a gov data online radio station! This situation is somewhat surprising, as Australia traditionally is a very early adopter of new technologies.

Thanks for your input.

Great post. Several agencies are releasing data for open access.

For example, the MashUpAustralia, via the Government 2 Taskforce: http://mashupaustralia.org/. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (@yourABS) has released data, via CData Online: http://www.abs.gov.au/CDATAOnline; allowing access to data to create your own Census data tables, etc.

The latest release of Australian Social Trends from the ABS (http://www.abs.gov.au/AUSSTATS/abs@.nsf/mf/4102.0?opendocument#from-banner=LN) are available under Creative Commons' Attribution 2.5 Australia (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5/au/).

Even, within my own state some transport information is available for download to mobile phone. Adelaide Metro offers timetable info, but only to Java-enabled phones: http://adelaidemetro.com.au/routes/nomads.html; also a Journey planner is available with the help of Google Maps.

There are more examples and a lot more innovation to come from the MashUpAustralia, and Apps4NSW.
