What are the Anthill Cool Company Awards?

The Cool Company Awards were launched in 2006 as a way for Anthill to acknowledge and celebrate Australian organisations that are doing things differently to bring about positive change. Cool Companies stay one step ahead of the rest. They breed leaders who are rule-makers and rule-breakers. They are trend-setters in attitude and action. Quite simply, they are … cool! More.

Sportsnet Holidays

Company: Sportsnet Holidays

State: VIC
Category: Global Growth

In 1998, Australian entrepreneur Rob Cecconi heard some friends were having a tough time getting tickets to the Daytona 500 NASCAR race in the U.S. Cecconi poked around and learned Australia had few travel agencies that booked trips to sports events.

Game, set, match. Later that year, Cecconi founded Sportsnet Holidays. Today, the company has its hands in sporting events around the globe and offices in London and Los Angeles.

Sportsnet is not just in the business of getting people to sports events. It creates sports-fantasy trips. Clients have toured pit lane in a V8 Supercar event, supped at a Melbourne Cup breakfast, taken a ride on the Tour de France course with Phil Andersen, tossed the coin before an AAMI Classic match and joined a tennis clinic with John Fitzgerald at the Australian Open.

Sportsnet Holidays protects its niche with a broad set of partnerships that would take time and money to duplicate. Through joint ventures with big swingers such as News Corporation, Sportsnet has access to media channels that reach 750 million households per week. This “pipeline” model has taken off in just the past 12 months.

At the Victoria office, Sportsnet Holiday cheers a consultant’s sale by banging a large gong while the inventive team blows their vuvuzelas. Last year, staff was treated to a five-star dinner, a poker tournament and a tennis lesson at Margaret Court arena with Wayne Arthurs and John Fitzgerald.

Late this year, Sportsnet Holidays won a BRW ANZ Private Business Award for the fastest-growing private business (annual turnover of under $100 million) and placed fifth on the BRW Fast 100 2010 list. The BRW Fast 100 ranks companies with up to 200 staff according to the average annual turnover growth over three years.

And why is Sportsnet Holidays cool? According to its Cool Company application: “We operate with an underlying belief that we are not impeded by those that have come before us. When people when we say we can’t, we find a way. We continue to defy what people think is possible.”
