Anthill Cool Company Awards

The Cool Company Awards were launched in 2006 as a way for Anthill to acknowledge and celebrate Australian organisations that are doing things differently to bring about positive change. Cool Companies stay one step ahead of the rest. They breed leaders who are rule-makers and rule-breakers. They are trend-setters in attitude and action. Quite simply, they are … cool! More.

One of two tied Cool Companies to win Anthill’s Micro Business Category Award is Kwencher, which is a company that makes something we Aussie’s can all appreciate: pale ale.

What’s more, Kwencher has even created a first-of-its-kind lager, Clingstone Peach and Darjeeling Tea.

And the company is “micro” to say the least.

“We have 200 customers in just 20 Months with only one employee,” the company’s Founder, David.

“We have created a new niche market and won best Pale Ale at the Asia Beer Awards this year.”

David runs the company alongside his wife Elly, and a single full-time employee. The Kwencher story starts en route to Ait Benadou, a Kasbah in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains, in 2008. While soaking in the surreal scenery, the couple sipped cold Moroccan beer and iced tea. This fateful sojourn led the pair to dream up their own lager, which launched a period of brewery experimentation, right in their backyard in Melbourne.

After perfecting his brewing skills, David and Elly formed The Beltz Group Beer Company and started brewing up batches of Kwencher, which it describes as a symbol of the unification of man, woman, and freedom.

Asked if they have any embarrassing (and amusing) pockmarks in their otherwise epic story, David says they’ve had a few.

“Our most embarrassing mistake was developing a 16 pack square carton instead of a 24 pack,” he tells us.

“Not sure what we were thinking. This we overcome by finally printing a larger carton so we could move more stock.”

A mistake is only bad if you don’t learn from it, and thankfully, Kwencher is well past that fledgling misstep. They’ve gone on to win awards with their brews, including the Asia Beer Awards in Singapore, winning Australia’s Best Pale Ale there.

Now, Kwencher adds Anthill 2013 Cool Company Micro Business Award to its list of accolades.
