Anthill Cool Company Awards

The Cool Company Awards were launched in 2006 as a way for Anthill to acknowledge and celebrate Australian organisations that are doing things differently to bring about positive change. Cool Companies stay one step ahead of the rest. They breed leaders who are rule-makers and rule-breakers. They are trend-setters in attitude and action. Quite simply, they are … cool! More

Evolving Machine Intelligence [WINNER, INNOVATION]

Company: Evolving Machine Intelligence
Website: http://www.machinegenes.com/
State: QLD
Category: Innovation

Evolving Machine Intelligence develops technologies that enable machines to understand and control complex systems (including other machines) non-invasively.

This is accomplished by reconstructing mathematical models for these systems from available information and designing control strategies to manipulate these models. This is done using new techniques, superior to “off-the-shelf” solutions, such as neural networks or fuzzy logic.

If that was confusing, brace yourself.

Evolving Machine Intelligence uses proprietary mathematics and high-performance computing, including new massively-parallel GPU cards, to build and evolve (literally!) candidate mathematical models from noise-polluted partial information; engaging in machine-intelligent testing of assumptions and ambiguities, exploring worst-case effects of “known unknowns”; communicating these processes, models and assumptions clearly and interactively to human operators; generating machine-intelligent strategies to control the system; implementing these strategies.

And what does that mean?

This kind of tech is hard to understand because it uses mathematics to influence how machines behave. Its recent practical applications have include engines in aviation and the development of an artificial pancreas, in particular, as a way to compute the appropriate insulin dosage for each individual.
