What are the Anthill Cool Company Awards?

The Cool Company Awards were launched in 2006 as a way for Anthill to acknowledge and celebrate Australian organisations that are doing things differently to bring about positive change. Cool Companies stay one step ahead of the rest. They breed leaders who are rule-makers and rule-breakers. They are trend-setters in attitude and action. Quite simply, they are … cool! More.

When is losing fun? The founders of Budge have an answer: when charities win.

Budge is a mobile app that merges giving with friendly competitions. Whatever the challenge — and it can be just about anything: a fitness test, a game of Words With Friends, a Cool Company competition — the loser has to give a small donation to the charity of the victor’s choice.

This solution, say the founders, engages Generation Y socially through a medium that they have already gobbled up. When you can ‘budge’ your friends towards selfless giving, there’s no reason to cast it as a time waster at best.

“GenY respond to intuition, simplicity and ease of use and want to be recognised by their friends in their digital life,” they explained in their application. “GenY want to give to charity but feel that the opportunity to give is not on their terms, is slow, annoying and feels like a chore.”

The Budge team already has a global presence, the founders situated in Melbourne with a second office in New York and an engineering team in Israel. The for-profit enterprise, still in Beta, gets its revenue through small transaction fees for each donation. Solutions are also in the works to integrate marketing and advertising features into the platform.

The business has already attracted serious heavy hitter investors such as Paul Basset and Matt Rockman. Giving games social cred and making a difference in the process. Just think about what Budge is offering gamers: bragging rights for both sides. Two out of three?

That’s cool. And the reason why Budge was named Anthill’s Coolest Company for 2012!.
