What are the Anthill Cool Company Awards?

The Cool Company Awards were launched in 2006 as a way for Anthill to acknowledge and celebrate Australian organisations that are doing things differently to bring about positive change. Cool Companies stay one step ahead of the rest. They breed leaders who are rule-makers and rule-breakers. They are trend-setters in attitude and action. Quite simply, they are … cool! More.

Bay & Fyfe

Company: Bay & Fyfe

State: NSW
Category: Micro Business

Awesomely artistic are the words that spring to mind when attempting to describe the coolness of Bay & Fyfe. The company takes the artwork of artists, like Australia’s own Daimon Downey, and collaborates to create unique and artistic fashion. The result? A statement to wear round your neck, for example, that is ostensibly an Australian exclusive. Cool points? Cha-ching!

And, Bay & Fyfe’s founder is pretty cool in her own right, too.

Firth Hucks initially came up with the idea of building a business around combing high fashion with high art (a perfect marriage, no?) around Christmas of 2010. She randomly caught an art exhibition by Downey and inspiration simply struck. She came up with the concept of crafting bespoke pieces of fashion based around the artist’s work.

The company is also using social media to deliver its message, says Hucks:

“Social media is a key partner of our customer engagement strategy. We actively use twitter, pinterest, Facebook, Instagram and Th Cools to connect with existing customers and attract new prospects.”

“Because art is at the core of what we do, these mediums are great to attract customers who value what we do via their own friends and networks – like-minded people with like minded tastes – connected to us via social media platforms. Today’s modern world is set up for small business to flourish like never before – you just have to find to make it work for you.”

Like any company, Bay & Fyfe has had to overcome its share of obstacles. Hucks says that the company’s first round of sample scarves were sourced from a manufacturer in India with a slanted view of what “Hermes quality means. Since switching to manufacturing in China, all has been onward and upward for the company. The company has even had a scarf appear in The Wall Street Journal – alongside Hermes.

More coolness, you say? Check.

The company is also doing its part to pay it forward. Hucks and Co. just made its first donation to the Ted Noff Foundation and plans to make more charitable donations in the future.

Novel, creative, and distinctly Australian, we’d say that Bay & Fyfe is one of the coolest companies on the radar right now.
