About ‘Social Entrepreneurs’ and 30under30:

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year saw a surplus of highly qualified entrants, so we thought we would highlight some of the bright and innovative nominees who just missed the Top 30. More.

Among these ambitious talents, we’re delighted to honour five individuals who are using their business savvy to make the world a better place: our 2012 Social Entrepreneurs.

James Chalmers, QLD (b. 1988)

Name: James Chalmers
Age: 24 (as of 1 August 2012)
Born: March 1988
Gender: Male
State: QLD
Known for: Townsqr

Remember the $20 you donated to kick-start that California artist’s big film project?

What ever happened to that guy? Crowdfunding can be an exciting way to get involved with brilliant ideas — but imagine how much more rewarding it becomes when the ideas are in your own community.

That’s how James Chalmers is promoting Townsqr, the Brisbane startup that he co-founded. Townsqr seeks to encourage stronger networking and fund raising for community projects at the local level, where donors can readily experience the effects of their contributions.

While still preparing its formal launch, Townsqr will operate as a not-for-profit social network, says Chalmers, and he’s using a viral Facebook campaign and targeting university students to generate buzz.

Recently, Townsqr earned commendation through Uniquest’s Trailblazer competition, perhaps a sign that the book on how to act locally is truly being rewritten.

Anthill asks: James Chalmers, what motivates you as an entrepreneur?

Creating a better world. Remember those in bonds as you are bound with them, one person’s poverty is my poverty, one person’s addiction is my addiction, an injustice committed against another is an injustice committed against me.
