1. THE BEGINNING

This innovation initially came to life when…

I was working within Australia’s not-for-profit employment sector helping unemployed Australia’s find work. In doing this I identified huge opportunities for innovation and technology in the sector, and just knew that there must be better ways of doing business.

With a significant entrepreneurial and sales and marketing background – including being a winner of the Anthill 30under30 in 2011 – I applied a marketing technology approach to solving Australia’s unemployment problem.

2. WHAT & HOW

The purpose of this innovation is to…

…develop a best-practice approach to career development, and provide these strategies through a scalable and cloud based solution to Australians. We do this by looking at the job application and career development process as a ‘career sales funnel’.

It does this by…

…rolling out an IT helpdesk style and knowledge-base system to the masses, where clients can submit a ‘career support ticket’ where we help with anything from tailoring a resume to a specific job application or negotiating a pay rise.

3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

…rather than use the same tell-tale ‘unemployed person’ resume template generated automatically for the over 700,000 unemployed people in Australia through their Job Service Australia provider’s Employment Services System, we’ve innovated, split tested and developed what we believe is the most effective template for finding work in Australia.

Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…

…high-value resources and advisory support, including free resume and cover letter templates, job-hunting techniques, strategies and technologies; work books and cheat sheets; exclusive industry insights and targeted advice for specific groups, all delivered in a free, scalable and innovative platform.

4. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In the past, this problem was solved by…

…what we like to think of as ‘blind leading the blind’, with no testing and research undertaken, career development advice was previously handed out on mass through ‘anecdotal’ evidence of what worked for them, without applying a ‘sales and marketing’ focus to career development.

Its predecessors/competitors include…

The Federal Government invests significantly in Job Service Australia providers, who case-manage Australia’s unemployed people who are receiving a Centrelink benefit.

5. TARGET MARKET

It is made for…

Rather than focusing directly on the unemployed, we believe we can make a greater difference by focusing on the often neglected ‘underemployed’.

We want to see more people progress into management roles, and use effective management training to grow the businesses they are in, or start new ventures which will have the flow-on effect of creating more jobs for the unemployed.

It is available for sale through…

The first step is to download our free resume template through our website instituteofcareers.com.au and from here you will receive our regular dose of career inspiration and resources.

Our marketing strategy is to…

We market our services through social and traditional media, as well as in partnership with recruitment companies, employers and training providers.
