1. THE BEGINNING

This innovation initially came to life when…

I was listening to Dr Carl on Tripple J when a school student called in and ask Dr Carl about climate change. Dr Carl’s response was “there have been five recognised mass extinctions on earth where 90% or more of all species have died, you are currently living in the sixth”. This inspired us to create a program to educate and empower the next generation about energy and climate change to make a difference for the planet.

2. WHAT & HOW

The purpose of this innovation is to…

…educate teachers and students about energy, energy efficiency and the impact they have on the environment (climate change).

It does this by…

…presenting the per student school energy consumption as a planet, from healthy to unhealthy, using near real time school energy data in the Green Galaxies app. The only way that the students can make their planet healthy is to act in the real world by reducing energy consumption at the school.

3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

It makes the invisible concepts of energy and energy efficiency and its impact and climate change, visible by using near real time data in the classroom.

Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…

Unit and lesson plans directly linked into a comprehensive knowledge bank and aligned with the Australian curriculum saving teachers considerable time. Allows schools to learn about and manage their energy consumption and thus help save money on their energy bill.

4. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In the past, this problem was solved by…

By avoiding the topic in schools or getting specialsed teachers in to teach the topic without integrated digital tools. Some schools would visit dedicated environmental education centres.

Energy education websites and energy teaching resources, however none of these have the schools own data usage integrated in engaging interactive tools with supporting curriculum aligned activities and lessons target towards STEM education.

5. TARGET MARKET

It is made for…

Initially Australian Schools nearly 10,000 in total with a balanced mix between public and private, followed by International expansion to schools worldwide (more than one million). The target audience is teachers, principals with students being the end beneficiary. Once metering is installed, it is available as Platform as a Service via an annual subscription.

It is available for sale through…

Contacting solar schools directly, offered as a value-add product through selected Solar Installers, and currently investigating other channels.

Our marketing strategy is to…

Reach schools via multiple channels. PR, case studies, online marketing campaign, conferences, B2B via Solar installers, educational re-sellers, word of mouth, partner with local and national businesses. Pilot program underway through a Qld Government grant.
