What is 30under30?

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year saw a surplus of highly qualified entrants, so we thought we would highlight some of the bright and innovative nominees who just missed the Top 30 by a wink. Behold, our 2012 30under30 Honourable Mentions! More.

Gabriele Ulacco, NSW (b. 1985)

Name: Gabriele Ulacco
Age: 26 (Born: December 1985)
Gender: Male
State: NSW
Known for: AR-MA

“Just 10 years ago the idea that individuals could be both consumers and authors of mass media was radical,” says Gabriele Ulacco.”Today it is reality.”

Ulacco sees this technology affecting not just multimedia, but physical forms of production, nowhere more than in architecture — which defines AR-MA‘s practice.

The firm (which stands for Architectural Research – Material Applications) consults with artists on challenging art projects and buildings, to help them realise their designs with a mathematical precision.

AR-MA worked on the details of the geometrically complex Great Hall at the University of Technology Sydney.

This year, they were contracted to build an installation for the 25th Kaldor Public Art Project, the latest in a series of works that date back to 1969.

Eggheads will revel in Ulacco’s design descriptives, such as his “facade with 1,100 panels with 1.2 million perforations supported on 5,500 steel angles, with an average transparency of 30%.”

For the rest of us, it’s best just to wowed by the visual — and appreciate the business behind the art.

Anthill asks: Gabriele Ulacco, what gives you entrepreneurial cred?

In a conservative industry where the right way to do things is the way it’s always been done, I have been able to bring a new way of doing things.
