Employees as dogs: The right breed for the job

11

As a digital recruiter, I’m often asked, “What skills do I need to make it in the digital industry?” I tell people that the required skills vary depending on the role, but it’s essential for everyone to have the right attitude – passionate and diligent. In other words, you need to be prepared to work like a dog.

That got me thinking. There are as many different types of digital roles as there are breeds – and personalities – of dogs. Which personalities are best suited to which jobs? Here are my thoughts on eight match-ups:

  • Jack Russell: Bold, alert and lively – big dog personality in a small dog’s body. Works well with early training and socialisation. This personality is suited for telesales.
  • Border Collie: Highly intelligent, agile, good at herding and rounding up things. This would suit a traffic manager.
  • Labrador Retriever: Affectionate, loyal, good-natured, tolerant and gets along well with people, but not happy if left alone for long periods. This type would make a good account manager.
  • Weimaraner: Confident, assertive, dominant, full of energy and independent, but needs a firm hand. These traits match a good account director.
  • Basenji: Alert and active, great hunter, curious and will chase whatever intrigues it. Easily house-trained. Good for a search manager.
  • Afghan Hound: High-spirited, needs to be trained gently but firmly so it doesn’t become stubborn and defiant. Intelligent and can be taught many tricks, but becomes depressed if it feels it’s being neglected. Good for graphic designer roles.
  • Bichon Frise: Called “the animated powder puff”, this cheerful, friendly and affectionate breed is playful, eager to please and loves being the centre of attention. Sounds like a PR account executive.
  • Irish Setter: Flashy good looks, expressive face and exuberant, boisterous personality. Excellent sense of smell. Definitely business development.
