About 30under30 and the Editors’ Ten:

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year saw a surplus of highly qualified entrants — far more than the 30 spots reserved for the best and brightest. We thought we would spotlight 10 innovative nominees who just missed the Top 30, yet impressed our judges enough to merit special attention. Behold, our Editors’ Choice Honourable Mentions for 2012! More.

Lachlan Blackhall, ACT (b. 1984)

Name: Lachlan Blackhall
Age: 28 (Born: February 1984)
Gender: Male
Territory: ACT
Known for: 17Dynamics

A seasoned academic and scientist, 28-year-old Lachlan Blackhall is also the linchpin of the startup business community in the ACT. And he has the CV to show for it.

His current project, 17Dynamics, is a boutique consultancy firm providing growth and innovation solutions for institutions in government, education, technology, energy and engineering.

Out of his consultancy, Blackhall developed simplyshow.me, a mobile platform that assists flustered business owners with their problems.

His earlier endeavours have been equally fruitful: InnovationACT cultivates startups out of the Australian National University and the University of Canberra. The Control School, providing university-based workshops in developing countries, was inspired by a fortuitous trip to Uganda in 2010. Covate, a private investing incubator and first of its kind in Canberra, followed in 2012.

Blackhall’s ease of explaining difficult concepts has heightened his profile and motivated him to tackle ever greater business conundrums. “I am passionate about solving problems,” he says, “particularly when it comes to addressing and overcoming the challenges of our time.”

Anthill asks: Lachlan Blackhall, what is your super power?

I have always been very people-centric. My ability to understand human nature has given me the ability to solve problems with people (and users) at the heart of the solution. This has been incredibly useful for creating compelling web and mobile user experiences.
