This is definitely the time to get started. Right now, engagement may be up slightly due to the recession and fears of unemployment. Eventually, however, things are going to turn around. And when they do, you're going to have a lot of people who feel as though they've sacrificed through the lean times on your hands. Only now, the competition is hiring. If you have a good engagement policy in place, you'll be better able to handle that situation when it occurs.

Great article, I think this topic continues to go under the table in the majority of businesses because the people responsible don't know how to turn the workplace into a positive atmoshpere. I don't blame them, it's a hard thing to achieve, but instead of ignoring the problem - knowledge is the answer, get help or do some research yourself.

If you can resolve this issue in your workplace, you could run into a huge amount of profits you didn't even know existed. The difference being an army of advocates instead of a bunch of drones. To get your workplace to an army of advocates does not mean more financial rewards, it means 'the boss' actively taking an interest in the individual employees and making a positive place to work. There's a lot more to it than that so maybe David Croston can help you with that.

I've had a good response (20 Answers) on a LinkedIn question along these lines, the question is 'Do you know anyone who makes business fun?', check it out
