About ‘Social Entrepreneurs’ and 30under30:

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year saw a surplus of highly qualified entrants, so we thought we would highlight some of the bright and innovative nominees who just missed the Top 30. More.

Among these ambitious talents, we’re delighted to honour five individuals who are using their business savvy to make the world a better place: our 2012 Social Entrepreneurs.

David Dixon, VIC (b. 1984)

Name: David Dixon
Age: 28 (Born: October 1984)
Gender: Male
State: VIC
Known for: One Girl

David Dixon’s journey started with one girl, an orphan in Uganda who was unable to pay her school fees.

As Dixon helped her pursue her education, he learned just how much odds are stacked against young women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa. It’s common for girls to miss school during their periods, and facing sexual assault is more common than graduating.

Many don’t attend school at all. Dixon is fighting the odds and making education achievable…One Girl at a time.

Together with a program that sponsors scholarships for girls in Sierra Leone, One Girl manufactures the eco-friendly LaunchPad for the benefit of all women’s hygiene. And Dixon isn’t averse to making social enterprise fun through unconventional campaigns.

“Do it in a dress” encouraged participants of both sexes to don school dresses for a day to raise thousands of dollars in funds for proper uniforms for African girls. “Being a male and co-founder of an organisation focused on girls’ education and periods is unique,” Dixon admits, yet the challenge hasn’t fazed him.

The tipping point for recognition, he believes, is imminent: “What has kept me going is knowing we have created an extraordinary organisation which is just about to explode.”

David Dixon’s favourite quote:

“The more I believe it, the more real it becomes.” David Dixon (aka Me)
