What is 30under30?

30under30 is an Anthill initiative that was launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. Each year, we invite our readers to nominate young Australian entrepreneurs deserving of recognition for their outstanding entrepreneurial endeavours. More.

Dane Mitchell, NSW (b. 1990)

Name: Dane Mitchell
Age: 20 (Born: February 1990)
Gender: Male
State: NSW

Fitness trainer and personal-health businessman Dane Mitchell is on a fast track. In September, the owner of Peak Health in the port town of Yamba won the Rookie of the Year award at the annual conference of Fit for Profit, a marketing consultant and accelerator for the fitness industry.

Peak Health is not a place where you can walk in on your own and fire up a treadmill. Every client works with a trainer on a customized program that integrates activity, diet and lifestyle.

Mitchell employs six people at Peak Health, and figures he’s within a year of being able to step away from day-to-day operations so he can focus completely on growing the business. He also is launching a “Four Weeks to Freedom” fitness bootcamp for women.

Mitchell says his company combines his two passions — health and fitness, and running a business. “All in all, I do this because I enjoy helping people and can see an opportunity to develop a very successful business.”

And he’s mentally nimble. When a mistake in handling his contact database sent out a load of spam emails, he sent his clients a “I’m sorry I stuffed up” offer as a means of apology. The gesture landed him three new personal-training clients.

After about a year and a half of operation, Peak Health is on track to generate up to $300,000 per year in gross revenue. When he bought the business at age 18, it was cranking out half that amount. Mitchell’s goals, both as a businessman and individual, appear to be on track.

“I am motivated to live my life on my terms,” he says. “I am in control of my future, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Dane Mitchell’s favorite quote:
“You cannot depend upon your judgment when your self-perception is out of focus. If facing worthy challenges, you will doubt yourself and feel unsure, but only make choices as if you’re confident and certain. Think, ‘What would I decide if I felt 100% sure about this?’ Do that. The result is the same whether you believe … in yourself or not, and soon the results will soon make a believer in you out of you.”
