What is the 30under30?

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians.

Each year, we invite our readers to nominate young Australian entrepreneurs deserving of recognition for their outstanding entrepreneurial endeavours. More.

Cory Byers, WA (b. 1988)

Name: Cory Byers
Age: 29
Known for: KBSS Engineering

Cory is the Director and General Manager of KBSS Engineering – a local Karratha business that supplies specialised support services to the mining, oil, gas and marine sectors.

KBSS’s core business streams are: SMP (Structural, Mechanical, Piping), Specialist Mechanical Services, Marine Services, Electrical and Instrumentation.

Cory started KBSS in 2012 off the simple thought, “Why can’t I do this?” He has led the expansion of the business from six employees and a two‑week job on Cape Lambert in September, 2012, to a company that has achieved strong financial performance year on year, and now employs around 90 people.

The success achieved by KBSS Engineering in less than five years is extraordinary by any measure. Cory’s internal achievements relate to driving the company to reach its key goals:

  • strengthening the reputation and the credibility of the KBSS brand
  • establishing solid client relationships based on trust
  • maintaining and growing revenue streams to increase market share in the Pilbara
  • increasing staff: started with 6 employees, now have a consistent workforce 90

Cory stands by his word. “I do what I say” is the standard he sets for himself and all his staff. The importance he places on honesty and integrity is passed on to all at KBSS. Cory’s staff follow his lead by telling the client honestly what they can do – and then delivering. This develops strong relationships based on trust. While economic times have changed, Cory believes KBSS is “only as good as our last job”.

A proud Karratha local, he supports the employment of local people where possible, and believes strongly in investing in our community.

KBSS has won numerous awards, including KDCCI Business Excellence Awards, and a Telstra Business Award. Cory was also nominated for the WA Young Achiever of the Year.

Anthill asks: What has been your greatest ‘sales’ achievement?

I am particularly proud of his efforts in establishing a Joint Venture with Indigenous company, Globe Hill, and achieving work on Wheatstone with Chevron/Bechtel. I am the primary contact and have successfully managed the work – helping it grow from 8 people in November, 2016, to a team of 70‑90 today. Thanks to my successful management, KBSS and the JV have proven themselves as an honest and trustworthy business partner. Now other companies are keen to talk about establishing Indigenous JVs and the future looks bright.
