Preview released for Mark Zuckerberg movie

It was only a matter of time. Columbia Pictures has adapted the story of Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, to create The Social Network, due for US release in October. However, it's likely to face stiff competition, with the Middle Men due for release in August. Yup, it's another tale of internet fame and fortune 'based on a real story' -- the 'invention' of ecommerce.

The power of you: Exploiting user-generated content

The advent of social media and real-time web networks means that the youth of today are more likely to source information from someone they know than via traditional media. Not only does this undermine most previous media models but it also poses the questions of how do you predict this trend and, more importantly, how do you capitalise on it? Here, Managing Director of venture capital firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ) Steve Jurvetson, speaking at the 11th Annual Top Tech Trends at the Churchill Club in 2009, gives his view on what the next five to six years hold and where he sees the opportunities in federated media.

Political searches dominated Google last week. But which names were the fastest rising?

Twenty-four hours in politics is a long time in search. According to Google, the 24 hours following Julia Gillard's ascension to the top political spot saw millions flocking to online media reports, watching press conferences streamed live online, tweeting ferociously - and searching for everything we can find out about this long and remarkable day in Australian politics. But which names were the fastest rising?

Startup School scrapes attendee tweets to create eBook

What I personally found so interesting about this item of digital media is that it was created by the crowd and assembled by attendees (or one particularly passionate attendee in particular). And, despite having not attended the event, I suspect that it is more helpful than most of the glossy 'take homes' I find shoved in most 'goodie-bags' post most conferences.

Treasury chief Ken Henry should be replaced, while Gillard seeks new economic advisers

In this week's overview of the economy, RMIT economist Sinclair Davidson voices the belief that Treasury chief Ken Henry is likely to be replaced, while Julia Gillard seeks new economic advisers. He says the Gillard Government will need to slash spending to bring about the budget surplus she says the government is committed to achieving.

Why this angel is not investing in social networks

A young entrepreneur asked me an interesting question, “If Twitter hadn’t happened yet and you had the chance to invest in it at start-up, would you?” As it turns out this is quite relevant as I did have the chance to invest in Twitter during a very early funding round through my own networks in Silicon Valley.

How to lead with value and socialise your brand

The markets and audiences of the 21st century are a savvy bunch. No longer gullible and susceptible to the heavy handed and brash branding practices of the past, they're looking for the 'why' and not the 'what' when they buy into a product or service, and this leaves companies and organisations charting new and unfamiliar territory. Andrew Collins explores the changing face of brand promotion.

Are techies twiddling their thumbs at your expense?

Four weeks ago, David Moore commenced his expose into the secrets of computer maintenance -- rules that are carefully guarded or simply too embarrassing to share. This week, he reveals some of the reasons computer technicians do what they do.

The Law of Success: Lesson 9 — Doing more than you are paid for

The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons, Napoleon Hill’s 1,600+ page first draft published prior to Think and Grow Rich, contains a lot of useful information that can help business builders realise their potential. In this series, Joshua Moore covers each of Hill's attributes in a practical way. Today, he discusses the value of doing more than you're paid for.

Navigating the dark waters of interest rates — what does it all really mean?

Be it in good economic times or bad, interest rates dictate how we spend our lives. Or more importantly, how we spend. Period. For many of us, how they are determined and interpreted seems to be the work of economics wizards and the faceless gods at the top of banking towers.

Electric cars ready to go mainstream

Better Place, an ambitious, venture capital backed company, is building electric car infrastructures targeting major cities around the world. The idea is simple yet constitutes a radical departure from conventional wisdom – instead of stretching the technological limits of a battery’s life, Better Place is constructing a network of battery swap stations that will allow electric cars to replace its depleted battery for a new one in less than 60 seconds.

Video parodies go viral in support of new Communications Minister

Today, the Twittersphere is alive with speculation over whether the controversial internet filtering policy will be ditched and what the future holds for Senator Conroy. The general consensus seems to be one involving a Cabinet shuffle, letting Conroy keep responsibility for the NBN and passing the Communications portfolio to fellow Labor Senator Kate Lundy. Many pundits would be pleased with this development. And so, it could also be argued, might the good Senator himself.
