What my son’s foul-shot taught me about business… and getting in the zone

Picture it: a packed basketball stadium with fans going wild. It’s my son’s basketball grand final. There are four seconds on the clock. His team is down by two points. And he’s just been fouled – meaning he has two free throws. He makes his way to the free-throw line – the enemy of even the most accomplished NBA player. If he nets both shots, the game goes into overtime. If not, his team will lose the game.

Are we ready for a cloud-exclusive computer? Google thinks so. Meet the Chromebook.

In about a month, on 15 June, Google will push its Internet-based kingdom into a new realm. The big question is: Will users follow? The product is called Chromebook, and it will be the first device to run Chrome OS, the operating system based largely on Google's Chrome browser. Notice that we've not used the word "computer" in describing the Chromebook. And that's because it's something... different. It will run no software. Everything you see and do on a Chromebook will be pulled down from the cloud. Everything.

MINI Cooper’s mainstreet marketing campaign thinks INSIDE the box

The team behind this recent Mini Cooper campaign have taken outdoor advertising to a whole new level: They've taken it down a notch. In what could possibly be described as 3D, ground-level advertising (we're open to suggestions), Dutch agency Ubachswisbrun/JWT created this 'visual piece' to demonstrate the compact nature of the MINI. Get out of your inbox! Some Merlin magic.

The idea is simple enough. Don't leave emails in your inbox. It's not a healthy place to live. Action them immediately - deal with them, delegate them, delete them or move them from you inbox to somewhere more organised. Just don't let them sit there, mocking you.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s formula for minimising entrepreneurial regrets

One of the very best pieces of advice for anyone just starting is, "Life is too short for regrets." The reason: regret tends to attach itself to the things we don't do and later wish we had rather than to the things we do then wish we hadn't. This really boils down to one big life lesson: have a crack.

Is this what the magazine of the future will look like… again?

Over the past two weeks, we have published the Sun Newspaper’s parody of the iPhone ads (and other mobile alternatives to print newspapers), Time Inc's prediction of what magazines of the future might look like and a fake (or real) leak of Apple's new Tablet Mac (aka MacTablet aka TabletMac aka iPad aka Apple Slate). But this concept piece put together by design collective BERG certainly has wow factor.

Now that's some innovative thinking; a sunlight activated QR code to target midday shoppers

E-mart stores in Korea are what Walmart stores are in America. They are everywhere, wildly popular and sell lots of stuff. Yet, at lunchtime the stores were a ghost town. Few shoppers, few sales. Here's how E-mart used sunlight, QR Codes and good old-fashioned discounting to turn things around.
