Our co-founder swore off using expensive recruitment agencies in his (50-person) business forever. He began a mission to slash the cost and time it took him to recruit new employees. He initially found a contract recruiter who would charge him an hourly rate. He could outsource the process, but save 90% compared to an agency. Then his friends started asking for her details. There was demand for this model!

Little Space Heroes – Virtual Universe (SMART 100)

A team of ex-Disney and ex-games industry veterans decided to create the best virtual world for kids. Our startup is the fastest-growing games company in Australia, growing from five people in Jan 2011 to over 20 people now, and we’re now taking our story to mobile platforms and brand franchise extensions.

PropConnect (SMART 100)

Founder Asaf Brukarz identified a market need for an effective real-time, online reservation platform that would connect property developers with sales networks to achieve higher property sales volumes. After speaking to a multitude of industry participants, from property developers to salespeople, a common theme of a lack of transparency and real-time information was identified.

The purpose of this innovation is to show people how to eliminate their debts in the fastest possible manner, saving wasted interest and valuable time.

I spent months speaking with independent sellers struggling to find simple and affordable online distribution channels that paid their product due respect. These sellers were also looking to partake in a relevant social cause that made them feel their business has a sense of purpose, and without cutting in to their already slim margins and time poor lives. Andable was born out of desire to provide a marketplace to support independent businesses, both here and abroad.

Imaginabox (SMART 100)

We gave our eldest son a cooking set but he didn't have a play oven to accompany it. With quick thinking, I turned the box the cooking set came in, into a cooktop by sticking some paper hotplates to the box -- problem solved and he absolutely loved it! I started to think about what other inexpensive toys could be created from a cardboard box...then came the idea of moving plastic parts to make them even more realistic and interactive, some stickers to make it more authentic...and the Imaginabox product line was born! I realised that the Internet held the key to solving the greatest daily challenge of the $7 trillion construction industry: getting paid. Whilst many licensed accounting and invoicing systems are available to the industry, none of these connect parties in a meaningful way. And although there are a growing number of online systems available to facilitate project collaboration, these focus on document control and file sharing rather than financial management.

SEWater has been replacing old septic tanks on properties in sensitive areas with Pressure Sewer Units for 10 years. These units come standard with localised alarming to let property owners know there is a problem with the sewer pump. After a power outage in a small regional town caused the entire town to be woken at 4am by 100 units all flashing and alarming, our staff believed we needed to find a way to monitor and control the pumps from our office.

The purpose Campaign Social is to give creative and media agencies, as well as corporations and organisations, the ability to develop their own promotions and campaigns on Facebook. It does this by offering a cloud-based digital platform, allowing users to build their own Facebook campaigns, without needing technical knowledge (i.e. coding).

Befree Bookkeeping & Accounting Service (SMART 100)

We got sick of having to charge our clients for fixing work that was already paid for and having to justify our fees to our clients for this work. The majority of bookkeepers weren't qualified and hence did not understand accounting and yet charged high rates based on experience. We realised we could offer the same services with better qualified staff at lower rates by moving accounting functions offshore.

Search Bird Technology (SMART 100)

We realised that what we were doing for ourselves online was way more valuable when applied to bricks-and-mortar businesses. This inspired us to really start the business. We can provide accurate predictions on how long it will take to rank any particular keywords. Because of this we are able to provide month-to-month contracts knowing we can keep promises we make to clients.

in2loyalty Mobile Loyalty Card (SMART 100)

in2loyalty initially came to life when I was at my local fruit grocer and they offered me a paper stamp loyalty card. Every week I shop there and as I don't carry a purse or wallet, every week I would forget my card and miss out on getting the rewards. As I always have my phone on me, I thought, wouldn't it be great if the stamp card was on my phone? Then I would never forget it, and would always receive the rewards.

Utilibill Cloud-enabled Platform for Converged Telco and Utilities (SMART 100)

Several Telco customers approached us wanting to offer electricity to their retail customers. They recognised our business system provided the foundation of all they needed to run both their electricity and Telco business in one single sign-on cloud-based SaaS system. Our clients identified the opportunity for us. We worked interactively with them to make this come to life.

DriftProof Sprayer (SMART 100)

Technigro CEO Nick Bloor realised that traditional commercial boom sprayers -- which are unuseable in even moderate winds -- created a lack of predictability for when our spraying activities could be carried out and, ergo, a lack of predictability for our clients. He therefore put the challenge to Technigro's R&D department to develop a solution that would allow spraying to be undertaken in all kinds of weather conditions, and thus make it easier to let clients know when work would be carried out.

DiscountOn Patented Coupon System (SMART 100)

We looked at the coupon systems used by companies such as Groupon that are bad for customers as they risk not being able to redeem an offer that has been fully paid for, and also bad for merchants as they do not get paid for unredeemed coupons which are kept by the group-buying site. We have removed the risk from both parties while keeping a revenue stream from the website.
