1. THE BEGINNING

This innovation initially came to life when…

Running the Better Boards Conference (a large annual event for non-profit directors) for many years, we noticed that directors of non-profit organisations don’t always have enough time to attend important continuing professional development (CPD) events, even when they know that attending an event or course will have a critical impact on improving their skills and the organisation on whose board they serve.

BoardWise was created to make director professional development accessible and cost effective. Directors are busy people they need access to CPD that is on demand, when they need it, not when trainers or speakers can be avaliable.

2. WHAT & HOW

The purpose of this innovation is to…

…give directors who govern the most important organisations in Australian society a way to access CPD on demand, ensuring the organisations they govern are performing at the highest level and that the time they spend on CPD is accurately documented.

It does this by…

1. Providing the board of directors of non-profit organisations with access to an online portal of professional development materials that can be accessed anywhere, anytime.

2. Leveraging the browser to accurately and automatically track the time spent on CPD in BoardWise. So no more logging of CPD time using time consuming manual forms, everything is automatically documented in the system.

3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

Prior to BoardWise there was no easy way for a non-profit organisations to know that their directors are regularly undertaking CPD in the online space.

BoardWise allows the entire board to participate and what they undertake is tracked. It allows directors flexibility in when and where they access professional development content. It’s also more cost effective for the organisation.

Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…

  • Improved access to high quality CPD materials
  • Cost effective
  • A structured method for year round CPD activities rather than once a year
  • No learning time wasted writing down what has been done
  • CPD tracking tools auto document time spent learning

4. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In the past, this problem was solved by…

…attending events, courses and conferences which are not necessarily close to the customer, cost effective or have time to cover all topics in-depth.

Webinars are not always at a convenient time either and are often too short to go in-depth on topics. Manually filling in forms (even paper forms!) was also used to document CPD.

Its predecessors/competitors include…

…a wide variety of in-person courses, conferences, events and webinars.

5. TARGET MARKET

It is made for…

…directors of Australian non-profit organisations (there 600,000 across the country).

It is particularly useful for directors of organisations in regional and remote areas who rarely have easy and affordable access to CPD events and activities which are common place in major cities.

It is available for sale through…

…our website boardwise.net

Our marketing strategy is to…

…leverage our existing customer base of hundreds of directors and chief executive officers, informing them about BoardWise by contacting them through our email list and via personalised hardcopy mailings.

We also intend to build an affiliate network via our existing network of consultants to the non-profit sector.
