1. THE BEGINNING

This innovation initially came to life when…

I stumbled across the drowning statistics in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and realised nothing was being done to address this issue. As an Autism Specialist, I started assisting families, swimming instructors and children themselves on a pro-bono basis, not quite realising how huge the issue was and with no intention to start an organisation. However, the overarching desire to facilitate change was so overwhelming that a now-international company was born.

2. WHAT & HOW

The purpose of this innovation is to…

…ultimately, we want to change the drowning statistics in children with ASD, we want parents to feel empowered, instructors to become certified and the children to stay safe, learn and thrive.

It does this by…

  • We certify swimming instructors as Autism swim Approved.
  • We are the only organisation in the world doing this. This way, we know they are equipped with the training, resources and support they need.
  • We provide a wandering and drowning training/membership for parents.
  • We run specialised programs such as modified nippers.

3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

…there is no competition. We are the peak body for wandering and drowning prevention. Even if there was, our organisation is run by Autism Specialists, who deeply understand the related issues, and have created solutions which address each and every reason as to why the statistics are the way they are.

Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…

Ultimately, better learning outcomes for all three stakeholders: Parents, swimming instructors and the participants themselves. Barriers to participation are overcome and everyone’s quality of life is increased.

4. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In the past, this problem was solved by…

Some families may receive support from an occupational therapist of behaviour specialist, however this is $180 per hour. We have developed a solution where the price point is very low for parents. Prior to Autism Swim, no specialised support was available to swimming instructors.

5. TARGET MARKET

It is made for…

  • Parents of children with a disability
  • Swimming instructors
  • Swimming centres
  • Individuals with ASD/cognitive deficit (not a direct customer)

It is available for sale through…

Our website (https://autismswim.com.au)- and we are currently developing an app which will allow us to reach a much more global audience.

Our marketing strategy is to…

PR campaign on the wandering and drowning statistics, Facebook ads (as this is mainly where our customers go for information), massive launch when app is completed.
