Anthill Magazine

What is Anthill? It's a business magazine. What’s it about? It's about innovation, entrepreneurship and rapid business growth. Until Anthill was launched in September 2003, the bulk of existing business titles in Australia were mainly concerned with issues of relevance to small/micro businesses or large corporations (one or the other). Anthill was developed to bridge this gap, appealing to highly innovative and ambitious ‘fast’ growth businesses - SMEs with rapid growth potential and larger companies that realise the value of reinvention to stay ahead. It does not focus on the traditional ‘nuts and bolts’ of business development (although this is a key element of editorial content), but instead it highlights the inspiring thrills, spills, trials and tribulations of business development and rapid commercial growth. Business can and should be fun, right!

Who really benefits from the Rudd Government’s new Commercialisation Australia program?

The news yesterday that the Federal Government has unveiled details of its $196 million Commercialisation Australia (CA) initiative has been welcomed by many entrepreneurs and innovation consultants. These same intended beneficiaries might also be forgiven for wondering whether it is an improvement on the $1 billion Commercial Ready Scheme it is designed to replace.

The Monthly Schwag (The segment formerly known as Cool for Comment)

At Anthill, we often find ourselves at the receiving end of unsolicited marketing gifts, from keyrings to… well… Beatles CDs. Last month, we decided to film our reactions and opinions about some of the best (and worst), and called it, ‘cool for comment’. The response was so positive (James got ambushed in a pub by a guy called Steve and Lachy's Auntie Jean thought it was 'swell') that we've decided to do it again, under the new and improved, more apt segment heading, 'the monthly schwag.'

Rory Sutherland: Life lessons from an ad man

In this extremely entertaining talk delivered at TEDglobal 2009 in Oxford (bet you'll be hooked after the first 15 seconds), English ad man Rory Sutherland explores perception and reality in a commercial world.

Online Marketing by Design – Masterclass

Online marketing means more than having a pretty website. There is a 'science to design' that most web developers simply don't want to know about.

Volkswagen’s viral success: the fun theory

Its latest campaign, The Fun Theory, is based on the idea that people's actions can be changed by something as simple as 'fun'. Played out (and filmed) on an unsuspecting public, a set of subway stairs transformed into a walking piano and a 'never-ending' bin manage to dramatically change people's typical behaviour for the better. And all of this with barely a reference to Volkswagen.

Are your customers taking over 50 days to pay you? According to D&B, that’s...

According to Dun & Bradstreet's (D&B) latest trade payments analysis, the payment terms of Australian firms have declined for the second consecutive quarter. A fall of three days since the previous quarter and 5.6 days in the past six months has reduced terms to 51.8 days – just above pre-crisis levels.

October is ‘Online Marketing Month’ at Anthill

This month, we have decided to explore the many facets of online marketing - from web development to the application of social media channels. For want of a better name, we’re calling this exercise Online Marketing Month. Over the next four weeks, we’ll be bringing you a range of opinions, articles and 'experiments' on this topic, culminating in an evening seminar and half-day workshop, to be held in collaboration with Design Victoria (aptly titled ‘Online Marketing by Design’).

What you can’t see is actually quite important

A nod's as good as a wink to a blind bat, claimed Monty Python. And they were right. If you can't 'see' something then you can't understand it. Comedian, writer and TV personality John Lloyd explores nature's various fathomable and unfathomable 'unseens' with dry wit, while drawing some amusing life parallels that leave you contemplating the importance of what lies beneath.

Guy In A House With Too Much Time On His Hands

Some people have too much time on their hands. This is absurd, yet I cannot look away.

Over-the-shoulder-bolder-holder mask gains top prize at Ig Nobels

An experiment that created diamonds from Tequila, research proving that named cows produce more milk and analysis into why pregnant women don't fall over. Yes, it's that time of year again for the significantly insignificant 'ig nobel' wards.

Anthill: Footage of the Early Years (kind of embarrasing, really)

In early 2006, Anthill accepted an invitation from ABC TV's Saturday morning business program Inside Business, hosted by Alan Kohler, to re-enact some of the moments that led to Anthill's birth.
