What is Anthill? It's a business magazine. What’s it about? It's about innovation, entrepreneurship and rapid business growth. Until Anthill was launched in September 2003, the bulk of existing business titles in Australia were mainly concerned with issues of relevance to small/micro businesses or large corporations (one or the other). Anthill was developed to bridge this gap, appealing to highly innovative and ambitious ‘fast’ growth businesses - SMEs with rapid growth potential and larger companies that realise the value of reinvention to stay ahead. It does not focus on the traditional ‘nuts and bolts’ of business development (although this is a key element of editorial content), but instead it highlights the inspiring thrills, spills, trials and tribulations of business development and rapid commercial growth. Business can and should be fun, right!

How can your favourite colour win over stakeholders?

My favourite colour is blue. If, when I was a wee tyke, you’d asked me why, it's likely I would have said: “... Because!" Kids are pretty blunt and uncomplicated like that. And yet we grow into professionals who use business jargon to explain why we do and don't like something.

Create a unique selling point (then deliver on your promises…)

When promoting your product or service, it’s easy to miss a key trick by failing to make what you’re selling unique. The term ‘Unique Selling Point’ (USP) was first coined in the 1940s, and first defined in print by advertising executive Rosser Reeves in 1961. A good current example of a clear USP is the well-known brand Head & Shoulders’ "You get rid of dandruff."

Do 9 out of 10 new businesses really fail in their first year?...

It's often said that nine out of 10 small businesses fail in their first year. However, according to credit reference checking agency Veda Advantage, only a very small percentage of businesses few close in their first 12-months. Less than two percent, in fact. However, 32 percent close their doors between their second and fifth, while 21 percent wind up between the sixth and ninth. Growing up can be hard. But it doesn't have to be that way. [PROMOTION]
