Australian iPad launch delayed one month

Early adopters frothing at the bit for the much anticipated iPad launch, will be forced to wait another month.

Earlier this morning, we received a very brief email from Apple’s Australian spokesperson on such matters, Fiona Martin.

It read:

Although we have delivered more than 500,000 iPads in the US during its first week, demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch an iPad™. We have also taken a large number of pre-orders for iPad 3G models for delivery by the end of April.

Faced with this surprisingly strong US demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May. We will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on Monday, 10 May. We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reason—the iPad is a runaway success in the US thus far.

Martin advises media outlets seeking more information to visit www.apple.com/au/pr.

However, I’ll save you the trouble. The above note basically says it all. If you’re an avid Apple acolyte, mark 10 May in our diary. If you think that iPad hype is reaching new levels of ridiculousness…. well… there’s a discussion brewing here.

iPad Australia Release Dates

Was: “Late April” (Media Release)
Now: “Late May”
Pre-Orders Open: 10 May 2010

I wonder how many people, hearing this news, is wondering if payment & postage from the US will get a unit to Australia quicker than waiting for the official release here?

I am disappointed, but do understand. Good thing I have to save my money to get one and this means I get extra time to do so…

Apple won’t ship to Australia. You need a local agent to do it for you.

Price USA (http://www.priceusa.com.au/) is the normal go-to for this sort of thing, but:
    a) She’s not taking iPad orders until she can confirm availability (http://twitter.com/priceusa/status/12222875792)
    b) She’s not taking new customers (http://www.priceusa.com.au/news/?p=120)

There’s a group of people I know of that all chipped in to buy a return ticket to the USA for one of them whose flown over to buy everyone an iPad, but he left this afternoon.

The things we do for some new shinyness from Cupertino!

Apple are expecting to sell 10,000,000 in the first 12 months. That’s over 800,000 each month. They knew there’d be a huge flood on Day One, so they have manufactured well over that 800,000 to deal with the initial demand. Even if it’s only 800,000, there’s half a million of the devices unaccounted for somewhere.

The truth is that it’s typical Apple fake-scarcity. We’re just the antipoedian schmucks who have to convince our US bound relatives to bring one back with them when they return from their holidays.

(John, if you’re reading this while holidaying over in LA .. Sorry I haven’t spoken to you in 15 years. Beer is on me when you get back good buddy, good friend. While you’re over there would you mind …)

9 things a 9 month-old can teach you about online marketing [VIDEO]

This morning, I sat down with my 9-month old son, Julian, to feed him breakfast. This is one of the jobs allocated to me as a first-time, new father. Remembering the arduous steps required to complete yesterday morning’s meal (and the day before that), and contemplating how bizarre it is that I must work so hard to provide him something that will make him stronger and healthier and happier, I began to think about online marketing. Yes, the brain works in mysterious ways. (And I am kind of sleep deprived.)
