What is the 30under30?

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians.

Each year, we invite our readers to nominate young Australian entrepreneurs deserving of recognition for their outstanding entrepreneurial endeavours. More.

Ashesh Jalota, VIC (b. 1991)

Name: Ashesh Jalota
Age: 26
Known for: Tailor Projects

Ashesh started Tailor Projects in 2014 with Brian Chua based on a common appreciation of beautiful buildings and a passion for delivering the best quality townhouses and exceptional customer experience. “We found in the market that apart from the high‑end apartments or the large city towers, there was no beautiful townhouse developments catering for the affordable market,” he shared with Anthill.

“Further, we heard numerous horror stories about people buying off‑plan and how everything went wrong and that they would never buy off‑plan again. Accordingly, we saw a need for us to come into the market to address this void and create incredible townhouses for the greater market.”

As far as their greatest ‘sales’ achievement so far Ashesh revealed that they once had the impossible task of convincing a strong‑headed client that his site where he was applying to change a planning permit to allow for 41 city‑sized apartments from 33 was going to lose him money and that a townhouse concept would be a much better outcome.

“He was adamant that he was right and he had been mislead and misinformed by certain advisers who kept incorrectly telling him he was doing the right thing. After six months of continuously providing him with information and facts, he agreed to change to townhouses and is making more money now than before!”

It hasn’t been easy all through though. “We faced a massive hurdle in our business model which could have destroyed everything we had built. In order to make our townhouses more affordable, we do house & land packages for our purchasers,” Ashesh said.

“However, only recently, there had been significant changes to the bank policy which prohibited us from achieving our goal. After discussing this problem with many people in the market, a chance conversation with a friend of a friend put me onto someone who had faced this very issue and had the contacts to resolve it, which allowed us to overcome the hurdle and save the business.”

After three years, Ashesh and Brian have managed to expand Tailor Projects significantly without significantly increasing their workforce. Accordingly, they have kept the team to only nine people, however, they currently have 85 townhouses across 14 projects which they are managing which amounts to a total gross revenue of over $75 million.

As for the business itself, revenue has increased by 75% to just under $2m from last year and are planning on further increasing our revenue again to $3m this coming financial year.

Anthill asks: What motivates you as an entrepreneur?

My activities are driven by a desire to create a legacy by changing the world. My philosophy is all about creating a better place for the future generations. We all have the power to change the world, as long as we have the will to do so. I have started locally with developing beautiful liveable townhouses, however, I have greater ambitions to really push into environmentally sustainable housing and products and creating a charity which supports people who are looking at making a difference. Further, we are looking at working with different groups to address the affordability crisis as well as the social housing shortage.
