Ari Gold, the fast-talking fictional Hollywood agent in the hit TV show Entourage, may not be known for his sensitivity nor subtlety. But no one would accuse him of being naive when it comes to business.
Take this scene from a recent episode, where he punctures a few illusions about starting a business held by his star client’s friend/driver, Turtle.

There is an awesome article written by an Australian author (name eludes me at the moment) that is all about what it takes to get published by a traditional publisher. It’s one of the best pieces I’ve read on this subject – it pulls no punches and lays out what a nightmare the whole thing really is (And how low the pay is).
The best bit is the last few sentences in which he says:
“If this article has put you off writing a book – good. Because if ANY article can put you off, it’s not what you’re meant to be doing.”

That’s gotta be the ‘cleanest’ Ari Gold speech I’ve ever heard!
What fabulous advice too – very similar to an incident in my life about 3 years ago (also delivered rather emphatically by an American businessman) and I’ve been grateful every day since.

Indeed. It took a while to find “usable” Gold.
