1. THE BEGINNING

This innovation came to life when…

We were made aware that the Environmental Protection Agency has certain lighting recommendations and requirements for luminaires located in sea turtle-sensitive areas.

2. WHAT & HOW

The purpose of this innovation is to…

The purpose of this innovation is to provide LED-powered luminaires to roadways or pathways within areas deemed sensitive to sea turtle populations.

It does this by…

Our Andromeda Turtle Safe Luminaires use a combination of wavelength modification and shrouding to a) minimise light bleed and pollution from their intended use, and b) produce light in wavelengths which are designated to be least likely to interfere with turtle hatchlings.

3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

This innovation employs the inherent benefits of LED technology and further ensures that turtle hatchlings, once having emerged form their nest sites, are not distracted or inhibited from proceeding directly to the sea which increases their chances of survival.

Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…

Our solution allows our clients to employ highly efficient lighting and still meet EPA guidelines for turtle-sensitive areas. Efficiencies include a 50% savings of power, and maintenance and replacement cost reduction of 80%.

4. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In the past, this problem was solved by…

Employing high-pressure and low-pressure sodium luminaires which are relatively inefficient and typically have large levels of light bleed (light not directed at the target — roadway/pathway). These lights do meet the wavelength requirements as noted by the EPA.

5. TARGET MARKET

It is made for…

All coastal settlements/facilities/councils worldwide who are within areas where sea turtles come ashore to lay eggs. This is a large market, and includes most of the Northern areas of QLD, NWT, and WA. It also includes several states such as Florida and Louisiana and other major markets.

It is available for sale through…

Luminaires will be made known to councils, electrical engineers, and architects who reside or service areas with known turtle rookeries. Also, we will educate turtle protection agencies, the EPA and other government bodies responsible for management of these areas.

Our marketing strategy is to…

As above — through education to the bodies/organisations above. We have already been involved with the Australian Endangered Species division of Parks and Wildlife having Col Limpus, the foremost expert on sea turtles, testing our luminaires this year at the Mon Repos Turtle Rookery in Bagara, QLD.
