What is the 30under30?

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians.

Each year, we invite our readers to nominate young Australian entrepreneurs deserving of recognition for their outstanding entrepreneurial endeavours. More.

Andrea Tjoeng, QLD (b. 1985)

Name: Andrea Tjoeng
Age: 8 (Born: July 1985)
Gender: Female
State: QLD
Known for: SCOUT

When she was a kid, Andrea Tjoeng would ask her mum to pack extra lunch, citing the fact that she was “a growing girl.” In reality, the young Tjoeng was selling the excess food to classmates.

It’s with that same entrepreneurial spirit that led Tjoeng to taking the reigns at SCOUT, an e-recruiting platform that was owned by Employment Office until 2008.

Tjoeng says, “When I took over SCOUT and turned it into a business in it’s own right in 2008, it wasn’t by chance. The system was owned by Employment Office but wasn’t EO’s focus in terms of product strategy.”

“I saw this as a opportunity. I’d been working at EO for four years (in Marketing) and approached the EO Managing Director to ask if I could take over SCOUT.”

“I convinced him that it was a risk worth taking and that I had what it would take to make it work. It involved a restructure and the costs of replacing my current role.”

Fast-forward to 2013, and SCOUT is up and running with $860,000 in revenue generated (2012-13), and a candidate management system that has, thus far, allowed 500,000 to apply for work, and 5,000 organisations to recruit.

What drives her?

“I want to make a contribution to an industry I really care about. I honestly believe that with SCOUT we are raising the bar for e-Recruitment and that makes me proud”

“When I see competitors trying to emulate what we offer, it makes me hungry to keep on innovating, to stay ahead of the pack, and never see SCOUT as a completed project. We can always do better”

“Of course a little profit along the way wouldn’t hurt!” Tjoeng concludes.
