1. You have no competitor. If you acknowledge them as a competitor than your product becomes a commodity. Commodity wars are won on lowest price.2. What does your product do that no other product does? Why is this important to a buyer? Position around this.3. Become the expert. You must be the recognized leader in your industry. People will pay more for the items the expert/leader sells.4. Market, market, market!Good luck! Thank you for this article! I've just found a surely full news portal about real marketing Try it!

Good point. Any media is useless unless you understand your market.

There is no denying that time spent on social networks has increased dramatically (Over 600% on face book in the last 12 month for example and a much greater percentage measurement on Twitter). Part of any good marketing strategy would be understanding why this is.

Such a major uptake of social media would suggest it is already meeting a need. It is marketers job to understand that need and deliver relevant information.

"There is no better time to start developing social media strategies. All market segments are spending a lot more time on social networks"
This is pure crap.
Why people still insist in suggesting media rather than adress needs?
When basics are not covered incremental is waste of money and energy.
Rethink your words.

It is true that a lot of us these days have what I and others call 'information filters'. Rather than being bombarded with tons of information, we follow and listen to people who think like us and are covering topics we are interested in.

These people generally provide recommendations of products to buy and things to avoid... which saves time finding it out yourself. A re-tweet from someone you know and/or respect is a perfect example.

Businesses stepping into social media need to do so respectfully, but also with authority. Having someone on the team that is known and respected online can help give you a major platform for success.

Here's an embarrassing example...

I 'discovered' this article (that you have just read) after someone re-tweeted the headline and URL on Twitter.

I received a Tweet, thought the subject looked interesting and clicked through from my Twitter account.

I was only then surprised to discover it on anthillonline.com - the site for which I am Editor-In-Chief!

This is a pretty embarrassing anecdote but demonstrates the speed of technology and the influence of social media.

1. My editor published the story
2. Our Twitter RSS syndicated the story
3. A follower re-tweeted
4. Only then did I 'discover' the story (before my editor, ten feet away, was able to tell me it was live)

What happens next? See the images above - next to 'Enjoyed this article?' Click on one and you'll find out.

In short, this story will be syndicated far and wide beyond the control of me and my peeps at Anthill.

The tribe is in control.

And we wouldn't want it any other way. ;-)
