What is 30under30?

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year saw a surplus of highly qualified entrants, so we thought we would highlight some of the bright and innovative nominees who just missed the Top 30 by a wink. A single ‘Like’ is a great first step toward greater brand awareness, and Abs Elmaz can’t understand why more brands aren’t on board.

The Melbourne entrepreneur founded Social House Media to capitalise on Facebook as a channel for promotional marketing.

SHM has designed 260 Facebook applications and competitions in the last two years, almost all of them the singular work of Elmaz (he has since taken on a programmer and a part-time designer).

One of his most successful exploits came with his app for the Stereosonic music festival; the app drew 20,000 visitors in 20 days, which in turn directed a swarm of traffic to SHM that turned into seven new clients.

A win-win, he says succinctly, “because my client is happy and so am I.” His real nerdy goal: 50,000 unique app users in one month. (If you like like that, Anthillians, you know what to do…)

Anthill asks: Abs Elmaz, what motivates you as an entrepreneur?

My biggest source of motivation comes from the applications that I build. I love that I’m responsible for the viability of an app because of the way my knowledge and thought have gone into it in a way that pushes the app to its full potential.
