Cory Byers started KBSS Engineering despite his lack of business knowledge when he was just starting out. Entrepreneurship never really made an impression on him when he was much younger. But this view didn’t remain for so long. “Our family wasn’t exactly wealthy, and after growing up with only the basics, I have become very driven and determined to succeed at life. Since starting KBSS, I had to learn about business very quickly, and the more I get involved, the more I learn to love what I am doing. So far, getting deals done is what I love the most.”
Like most startups, Cory’s business went through birthing pains. In the middle of last year, his business took a downturn when the contract with his biggest client ended earlier than expected. “Luckily though, I was able to get ahold of mentors who set me on the straight and narrow. They were able to guide me through this tough period. After that experience, I have learned to always prepare for the worst no matter what, and to have a doomsday plan in place.”
At present, his company has over 100 employees and is still going strong. Just this year, Cory won the Karratha Young Professional of the Year Award, while his company won the WA Telstra Australian Business Awards in the Startup Category. He believes that a combination of luck and hard work have been the key to his success thus far. “I believe I was at the right place at the right time, and had the balls to give it a shot while everyone else was sitting on the bench, too scared to jump in.”

My superpower is my ability to learn on the fly. I am a very fast learner and I am constantly looking for someone to mentor me.
