Nice one. It's great that you posted solutions to fix those marketing mistakes. Determining the notable mistakes helps one get a better understanding of what's needed in order to be effective.

I find that when I was a newbie at Email Marketing I tried to hard. Just keep it simple in text format and like you are talking to someone new that you want to be a friend with.

Here, here! to the point about testing. You can only learn what keywords work, what style of subject line gets the most opens, the copy that gets the most click-throughs and so on, if you test.

I agree it's a whole other article, but it might be a start just to begin tracking your open rates (number of times the email is opened as a % of emails sent) for different subject lines, and possibly too for different sublists (eg different customer segments or geographical locations or different methods by which your leads joined your list). Just start!

Many people don't prefer newsletters from online services they are using. Moreover as internet usage increases, too many emails is becoming a problem for lot of people!
So even though currently it may be showing good response for some, email marketing ROI will decrease.
Email targeted ads is different at least in Google as they are relevant to the kind of email exchanges happening with each individual, so have a better chance at being clicked.

In regards the the design, it may sound counter productive coming from a graphic designer but our clients often experience better responses to plain text emails rather than using any design at all. It's probably something worth testing for anyone looking at email marketing.
