‘Bean-talk’ — a golden egg for small business

January 28, 2010 | By Anthill Magazine

Running a small business inevitably means becoming a jack of all trades, including ‘doing the books’.

This, in turn, requires one to learn tricky accounting packages, spreadsheets and accounting jargon. The result is waving goodbye to your evenings, weekends and regular sleep.

On the plus-side, there are a number of resources out there to help. What’s even better for SMEs is when the resource is free. Enter Bean-Talk, a 100 percent free resource for small business owners and staff to help with starting, growing or exiting a business.

Bean-Talk covers:

  • Starting, growing and exiting your business
The cold hard truth about cashflow.
  • Tips & tools for accelerating cashflow and boosting profits.
  • Ask the experts – business owners can send in their questions to be answered in the Bean-Talk newsletter.

Coming to Bean-Talk this year

  • Introductory videos on the main business building concepts of financial management.
  • Free memberships for business owners, allowing them to download free tools (developed by CAD Partners) to run their business more efficiently and profitably.
  • On-Demand Podcasts discussing ways to improve cashflow and decrease the costs of running a business.

It might not qualify as our website-of-the-week but it’s definitely one worth checking out when short an answer.

I have consulted in various capacities with innumerable small businesses, and every one of them were afraid of the finances end of the biz. They would simply short-circuit when finance issues came up, or put all that in their paper “Pile of Denial”, or ignore it until their failing business forced them to finally face their financial demons.

I like the look of Bean Talk… it seems to present complex financial issues in a clear and easy manner, and it uses real English… not accounting jargon!

I will definitely be referring my clients to Bean Talk as a “safe place for financial guidance”.

You also want to think about reviewing or interviewing saasu.com the easy online accounting guys. It is a pure software-as-a-service web replacement for MYOB and Quicken. Unlike lots of others these guys are a real Australian firm with thousands of users, hundreds of partners and works for Australian conditions e.g. GST, PAYG, ATO electronic lodgement while still being easy to use. Invoicing, payroll, inventory, full general ledger, multi currency etc.

Best of all it is free.

Another useful free resource for SME’s is Anthill’s own Business Services Marketplace.

It can be accessed via this link: http://www.ifindconsultants.com/?emcc=7352E467041D

It makes the process of choosing a business to outsource too much easier. You can simply post a request detailing what you need, & have businesses respond to you.

9 things a 9 month-old can teach you about online marketing [VIDEO]

This morning, I sat down with my 9-month old son, Julian, to feed him breakfast. This is one of the jobs allocated to me as a first-time, new father. Remembering the arduous steps required to complete yesterday morning’s meal (and the day before that), and contemplating how bizarre it is that I must work so hard to provide him something that will make him stronger and healthier and happier, I began to think about online marketing. Yes, the brain works in mysterious ways. (And I am kind of sleep deprived.)
